2013: ROWLEY REGIS MAN JAILED AFTER ASSAULT AND THREATS AGAINST EX-GIRLFRIEND
A man from Rowley Regis, driven by a violent outburst, restrained his ex-girlfriend by grabbing her throat, displayed an air pistol, and kicked her during an assault. He then stole her vehicle and collided it with a road sign.
Following his arrest, Richard Deakin continued to threaten his former partner of seven years, even warning that he would kill her parents.
Deakin received a 16-month prison sentence after pleading guilty to charges including assault, battery, car theft, witness intimidation, and possession of drugs such as cocaine and cannabis.
During sentencing, Judge Peter Barrie at Wolverhampton Crown Court stated that Deakin had lost control and behaved in a frightening manner, highlighting issues with anger management.
The defendant’s lawyer, Philip Brunt, explained that Deakin’s relationship had involved 'unpleasant violence' and acknowledged his client’s remorse, describing his behavior as 'disgraceful.' Brunt also clarified that the air pistol belonged to the victim, whose father had supplied it; he noted the weapon was empty and pose no real threat.
The lawyer further mentioned that Deakin had moved on with a new girlfriend and was focusing on the future.
Alongside the prison sentence, Deakin was disqualified from driving for a year and was subject to a restraining order preventing contact with his ex-partner after several troubling incidents.
Prosecutor David Bennett detailed that Deakin, unable to handle their breakup, assaulted his ex and waved a lock knife during an argument.
He also grabbed her by the throat, spat at her, and threatened her father’s life after returning from work.
Deakin then kicked her in the back, took her car, and crashed it near her parents' residence.
After his arrest, police released him on bail, but he subsequently made threatening phone calls and sent messages containing threats to kill both the woman and her family.
