REGINALD STYLES SHOCKS HARTLEPOOL WITH CHILD RAPE CAMPAIGN
In October 2016, a 71-year-old man named Reginald Styles from Hartlepool was sentenced to a lengthy prison term of 17 years after being convicted of multiple heinous sexual offenses committed against a young girl over three decades ago.The case, which was heard at Teesside Crown Court, revealed a disturbing pattern of abuse that began when the victim was only nine years old.
Styles was found guilty of 11 serious sexual charges, including rape, indecency with a child, and indecent assault.
The trial, which lasted a week, culminated in a conviction that shocked the local community and highlighted the severity of his crimes.
The court heard that Styles had subjected the girl to repeated assaults, with the abuse spanning several years during her childhood.
The victim, now in her forties, bravely provided a Victim Personal Statement in open court, describing the profound and lasting impact of his actions on her life.
Judge Stephen Ashurst, presiding over the case, delivered a stern sentence, emphasizing that Styles showed no remorse for his actions.
The judge pointed out that Styles had dismissed the victim as a fantasist seeking compensation, a claim the court found to be utterly unfounded and indicative of his lack of empathy.
The judge also noted that Styles had accused the girl’s grandparents of potential imprisonment if she disclosed the abuse, a tactic used to intimidate and silence her.
In his sentencing remarks, Judge Ashurst stated that Styles would not be released automatically halfway through his sentence.
Instead, his case will be referred to the Parole Board, which will determine whether he can be released based on whether his continued detention is necessary for public safety.
The judge highlighted that although Styles’s offending may not fit the description of a “campaign of rape,” the repeated and serious nature of his offenses against a vulnerable child warranted a significant custodial sentence.
The court also mandated that Styles register as a sex offender for life.
During the hearing, it was revealed that Styles, who resides on Thetford Road in Hartlepool, had recently celebrated his Pearl wedding anniversary.
His wife spoke highly of him as a devoted husband, father, and grandfather, and her hopes for a peaceful retirement were shattered by his conviction.
Medical reports from local hospitals indicated that his health was typical for a man of his age, and the prospect of a long prison sentence was daunting for him.
Styles was sentenced to 17 years in prison, with an additional one-year license period, for four counts of rape, six counts of indecency with a child, and one count of indecent assault.
The judge’s decision underscores the gravity of his crimes and the lasting damage inflicted upon his victim, who endured years of suffering in silence.
The case has left a lasting mark on the Hartlepool community, serving as a stark reminder of the importance of safeguarding children and ensuring justice for victims of sexual abuse.
