RASTRICK MAN HANDED SUSPENDED SENTENCE FOR ASSAULTING GIRLFRIEND AFTER DRUG-FUELLED RAMPAGE
Reece Wilson, 42, was brought before Leeds Crown Court after he threw a dinner plate at his girlfriend during an argument, following an offensive comment he made.The incident took place in a beer garden at the Four Sons pub in Rastrick, where the couple had been consuming crack cocaine earlier.
The attack caused a head wound approximately 2 to 4 centimeters in size, which was temporarily closed with nail glue applied by the woman's friend when she went to her residence afterward.
Prosecutors explained that Wilson, of Clough Lane, initially contacted police claiming his partner had inflicted the injuries upon herself.
The woman declined hospital treatment initially but later sought medical care from her general practitioner.
During the hearing, it was stated that Wilson admitted guilt for wounding at trial and has a history of 40 previous offences, notably including violent offenses such as batteries and breaches of orders.
The victim conveyed feelings of being "really low" due to the assault and ongoing abuse, and her emotional statement suggested she was striving to recover but feared her inaction might lead to further harm.
Defense lawyer Paul Canfield emphasized that Wilson's time in detention amounted to about 14 months and argued that the incident was motivated by anger and frustration, not malice, noting a significant gap since his last convictions in 2020.
The judge described Wilson as a "bully" who behaved disgracefully and stressed the importance of the victim's cooperation, which was motivated by the understanding that continued victimization could result in grave injury or death.
Ultimately, Wilson was sentenced to an offender management program, community service, and a restraining order, with a suspended prison term reflecting concern over his behavior and the need for rehabilitation.
