RASTRICK MAN PAUL LODGE SENTENCED FOR SEXUAL ABUSE OF SCHOOLGIRL IN HALIFAX
In a case that has shocked the community of Rastrick and the wider Halifax area, Paul Lodge, a 48-year-old resident of Gargrave Close, was sentenced to four years in prison after confessing to police his involvement in the sexual abuse of a young girl. The incident, which took place in Halifax, came to light after Lodge voluntarily walked into a police station and admitted to the misconduct.Authorities launched a formal investigation in November of the previous year following Lodge’s startling confession. He revealed that he had engaged in inappropriate conduct with the girl, who cannot be publicly identified due to legal restrictions. Lodge recounted that he had woken up to find the girl on top of him, and out of concern that the situation might have escalated further, he chose to surrender himself to the police. His decision to come forward was seen as a significant factor in the subsequent legal proceedings.
During the court hearing, Lodge pleaded guilty to four charges related to sexual activity with a child, as well as an additional charge of inciting a child to engage in sexual activity. His own legal representative, barrister Jeremy Lindsay, acknowledged the severity and reprehensibility of Lodge’s actions. Lindsay described the abuse as “despicable” and emphasized that it had not only caused harm to the victim but also tarnished Lodge’s previously good character.
“He has clearly accepted that what he was doing was wrong, as evidenced by his decision to go to the police,” Lindsay stated. “He was visibly upset and concerned about his actions. If he had not taken that step, it is likely that the abuse would have remained undisclosed for a longer period.”
While acknowledging that Lodge faces a significant custodial sentence, Lindsay argued that the risk of future offending was minimal. The victim impact statement, read aloud by prosecutor Jayne Beckett, detailed the profound emotional scars left by the abuse. The girl described how her mental health and academic pursuits had been severely affected by the trauma she endured.
Judge Peter Benson, presiding over the case, acknowledged Lodge’s decision to self-report as a positive aspect but condemned his actions as “wicked and wrong.” The judge pointed out that the abuse was not an isolated incident; it involved multiple instances and culminated in both Lodge and the girl being found in a state of undress, under the influence of alcohol. The judge characterized Lodge’s conduct as disgraceful, highlighting elements of grooming and the significant age disparity between him and the victim.
As part of his sentence, Lodge will be required to register as a sex offender for the remainder of his life. Additionally, he is subject to a sexual harm prevention order that prohibits him from having unsupervised contact with children under 16 and from making contact with the complainant. Lodge, who had no previous criminal record, was also condemned for his actions but was commended for his decision to come forward, which the court recognized as a crucial step in addressing the crime.
