RAPIST’S APPEAL OVER 18-YEAR JAIL SENTENCE REJECTED
The appeal of a sex offender sentenced to 18 years for the assault of a teenage girl has been rejected.Raymond Mitchell, aged 63 and living on Dudley Avenue in Whitefield, was convicted at Bolton Crown Court last September on 12 counts of rape and one of indecent assault.
His appeal to lessen the sentence was heard in the Court of Appeal in London but was dismissed by three judges.
Judge David Radford commented that Mitchell showed no remorse or intent to change his actions during interviews conducted before sentencing.
The prosecution case revealed that Mitchell was prosecuted following accusations from a teenage girl of sexual abuse and rape, as well as allegations from a younger girl of indecent assault.
During the proceedings, Mitchell maintained his innocence.
His legal representatives argued that the 18-year sentence was disproportionate, claiming it was based on older sentencing guidelines that required serving two-thirds of the sentence before release.
However, Judge Radford rejected this reasoning, noting that the offences took place years ago under previous sentencing laws, and confirmed the sentence.
