RALPH MORRIS SHOCKING CRIME IN LUDLOW AND CAMBRIDGESHIRE

In a tragic and disturbing series of events, Ralph Morris, a man once entrusted with the care of vulnerable children, met a gruesome end in his prison cell at Littlehey Prison, Cambridgeshire. Morris, aged 53 at the time, had been serving a 12-year sentence after being convicted of heinous sexual offenses committed at a special school he owned and operated in Ludlow. His death occurred in February 1997, and it was determined by an inquest in Huntingdon, Cambridgeshire, that his demise was a result of a 'misadventure.'

According to reports, Morris resorted to a bizarre and self-destructive method in a desperate attempt to escape incarceration. He consumed a dangerous mixture of metal objects, including screws, batteries, drawing pins, and razors, in what was described as a 'diet' aimed at ending his life. Unfortunately, by the time prison authorities became aware of his actions, his stomach had become so filled with metal that medical intervention was futile, leading to his tragic and painful death due to a perforated stomach.

The background of Ralph Morris's criminal activities is deeply intertwined with a broader scandal involving abuse at the Castle Hill home in Ludlow, Shropshire. The investigation into this privately owned facility, which took in children from various local authorities, began in 1989 after numerous complaints from former residents. A total of 57 victims came forward, revealing a pattern of severe abuse. Morris, who was the proprietor of Castle Hill, was eventually jailed in 1991 for his role in these crimes, which included both sexual and physical abuse of the children in his care.

The 'Castle Hill Report,' a Practice Guide compiled by Shropshire social services based on their investigation, detailed the extent of Morris's misconduct. Between 1984 and 1989, prior to the school's closure by the Department for Education, Morris was found to have sexually abused 43 emotionally disturbed boys who boarded at the facility. An additional 50 boys suffered physical abuse under his watch. The report highlighted the manipulative and exploitative tactics Morris employed, including falsifying qualifications in the school's prospectus, registering the school with the Department for Education as having 37 beds when it actually housed up to 60 pupils, and tampering with student records.

Further details revealed that Morris had previously worked at a youth club in Liverpool, from which he left following allegations of financial mismanagement. Despite multiple allegations of abuse from pupils over a span of two years, authorities failed to act promptly, partly due to a dismissive attitude towards the pupils, who were considered maladjusted and therefore unreliable witnesses. The investigation uncovered that Morris engaged in sexual activities with boys aged between 11 and 20 during night shifts, with some sessions involving mutual masturbation and group activities, which the boys referred to as 'six-handers.'

Victims who responded to Morris's advances were often rewarded with money, expensive clothing, and cigarettes. These boys, described as a 'fearful and vindictive corps,' were also manipulated into attacking other pupils at Morris's behest. During school hours, Morris would often call boys out of classrooms under false pretenses and take them to his private rooms for sexual abuse, further illustrating the extent of his predatory behavior.

In July 1993, Morris faced a further setback when he attempted to appeal his conviction. The appeal was heard in London before Lord Justice Kennedy, along with Mr Justice Morland and Mr Justice Cresswell. The court dismissed his appeal, reaffirming the validity of the jury’s verdict based on the testimonies of the boys from Castle Hill School in Ludlow. Lord Justice Kennedy emphasized that the trial had been conducted with fairness and that the evidence presented was compelling. Morris, who did not attend the hearing, was convicted at Shrewsbury Crown Court in April 1991 on charges including buggery, indecent assault, and assault causing actual bodily harm. His appeal was denied, and he remained incarcerated, with no further challenge to his sentence.

The case of Ralph Morris remains a stark reminder of the failures in safeguarding vulnerable children and the devastating consequences of unchecked abuse. His death in prison marked the end of a long and sordid chapter in Ludlow and Cambridgeshire’s history of institutional misconduct and criminality.
