HUGH HUGHES AND LYLE HUGHES SENTENCED FOR SEXUAL OFFENSES IN LUDLOW AND WHITCHURCH

A disturbing case involving a father and son from the Shropshire area has culminated in their sentencing after a series of heinous sexual offenses committed against young girls. Hugh Hughes, aged 72 and a resident of Ludlow, received a substantial prison term of 18 years following his conviction on multiple counts of sexual misconduct spanning over three decades, from 1987 to 2021. The severity of his crimes was underscored by the fact that he was found guilty of 19 separate offenses, including six counts of sexual assault against a child, 12 counts of indecent assault on a child, and one count of sexual assault against an adult female.

Hugh Hughes’s criminal activities, which stretched across many years, finally came to light during a trial held at Shrewsbury Crown Court. The court's decision reflects the gravity of his actions and the harm inflicted upon his victims. As part of his sentence, Hugh Hughes will be placed on the sex offenders register indefinitely, ensuring ongoing monitoring and restrictions to protect the community from further offenses.

Meanwhile, his son, Lyle Hughes, aged 21 and residing in Whitchurch, was also brought to justice. He was sentenced to an 18-month community order after being found guilty of two offenses committed between 2014 and 2021. Unlike his father, Lyle Hughes’s punishment did not involve imprisonment but included strict conditions aimed at rehabilitation and supervision.

Detective Constable Nic Coupland of West Mercia Police expressed his satisfaction with the sentences handed down at the court on June 12. He emphasized the importance of the victims’ bravery in coming forward and enduring the lengthy legal process. "I am pleased that the sentence reflects the gravity of the offenders' crimes," said Det Con Coupland. "The victims have shown tremendous courage throughout the trial, and I would like to thank them for their bravery and perseverance. I hope these sentences will allow them to now move forward with their lives."
