MAN ON TRIAL FOR VIOLENT ATTEMPTED MURDER OF WIFE IN SMALL HEATH
Update 25/04/2026: Raju Mollah, 50, was arrested shortly after reports of a woman being attacked by a man in the Small Heath property on 12 January last year.Mollah initially admitted inflicting grievous bodily harm with intent but denied attempted murder.
However, following a trial at Birmingham Crown Court in August, he was found guilty of attempted murder.
Yesterday (Friday) Mollah was jailed for 26 years.

A 49-year-old man named Raju Mollah is currently on trial at Birmingham Crown Court, facing charges related to a severe assault on his wife, Mosammed Mumtaz, at their residence on Heather Road in Small Heath on January 12.
Mollah has admitted intentionally causing grievous bodily harm to his wife but denies attempting to murder her.
The prosecution characterized the incident as highly violent, outlining how Mollah poured hot oil onto his wife’s face and body, resulting in significant burns.
Additionally, he inflicted further injuries by hitting her with an object, stamping on her while she was on the ground, and placing hot cooker hob racks on her chest and face.
The court was told the couple had been married since 2002 and were involved in an argument over property sales just prior to the attack.
Ms Mumtaz described how her husband poured oil over her head, causing injuries, and physically assaulted her, leaving her with multiple wounds, including a missing tooth, burns, and facial injuries.
When law enforcement arrived, Mollah was found to be visibly agitated and distressed, giving incoherent statements and initially claiming the injuries were accidental.
Mrs Mumtaz recounted the trauma of her injuries and her pleas for forgiveness.
The court also heard that during police interviews, Mollah admitted to punching and stamping on his wife, and he maintained in court that he did not intend her harm, despite evidence suggesting a deliberate assault aimed at her life.
The trial is ongoing, with the judge weighing the seriousness of the injuries against the alleged intent behind the attack.
