WREXHAM MAN JAILED FOR RAPE AFTER PARTY INCIDENT

A MAN who was drunk and unconscious after a party felt suicidal after he woke to find himself being raped, a court heard.

It turned out the rapist, Prinrwreve Mawarire, 27, had only been released from prison a matter of months earlier after he was jailed for a rape on a woman following a party in similar circumstances.

Judge Rhys Rowlands, sitting at Mold Crown Court, told him: “I have no doubt at all that sexually, you have no concept how you ought to behave towards others.” He had taken advantage of the man after reassuring the victim’s wife that he would look after him.

Judge Rowlands said that Mawarire was a danger who posed a significant risk of further sexual offending.

He was jailed for seven-and-a-half years after he admitted the rape charge after a party in North Wales.

His licence, when he would be subject to prison recall, was extended by two-and-a-half years, which technically makes it a 10-year sentence.

He was also ordered to register with the police as a sex offender for life.

Simon Mills, prosecuting, said there had been a party in the Wrexham area in July and the victim was there with his wife and children.

Alcohol was consumed, the victim had far too much and retired to bed at 2am but his wife found him being sick in the bathroom about an hour later.

She told him off and said she was not going to clear up after him but Mawarire, of Montague Road, Warwick, followed her into the bathroom, reassured her that it would be OK, that he would look after him and that he would clean up the sick.

The victim was drunk and unconscious and the next thing he recalled was waking up on bedding on the living room floor and being aware of someone on top of him.

He was being raped.

The victim called out for help, Mawarire insisted he had done nothing wrong, others awoke and the victim’s wife found him in a traumatised state repeatedly saying he had been raped.

She felt betrayed after she had trusted Mawarire to look after him.

Mawarire was arrested and interviewed and denied that anything had taken place, but swabs were taken and it was forensically proved that intercourse had taken place.

In a victim impact statement, the victim had told how the incident had changed his life.

He struggled to function in life without medication.

He had missed work, was worried that it could happen again and he had contemplated suicide on more than one occasion.

He was particularly disturbed that members of his family had been in close proximity to what occurred and he had been under additional pressure after being given strong medication in the immediate aftermath to reduce the risk of infection.

In February Mawarire had been released from a 42-month prison sentence, imposed at Coventry Crown Court, after he admitted raping a woman.

The court heard that in the present case Mawarire initially denied the offence, but changed his plea to guilty after the forensic evidence was served, and then unsuccessfully applied to withdraw his guilty plea.

Judge Rowlands said that Mawarire was a danger who posed a significant risk of further sexual offending.
