PHILLIP CLARKE'S HORRIFIC CRIMES IN COVENTRY: LIFE SENTENCE FOR SERIAL SEX OFFENDER

In a case that has shocked the Coventry community, Phillip Clarke, a man with a disturbing history of sexual offenses, has been sentenced to life imprisonment following a series of heinous crimes against young girls.

The sentencing took place at Birmingham Crown Court, where Judge Sylvia de Bertodano emphasized the severity of Clarke’s actions and the ongoing danger he poses to the public.

Clarke, aged 39 and formerly residing on Lillington Road in the Wood End area of Coventry, pleaded guilty to multiple charges of rape and sexual assault.

His crimes span over a decade, with the most recent revelations coming to light only after he lodged an appeal against a previous 16-year sentence.

The court heard that Clarke’s offenses against his second victim only surfaced after her decision to report the abuse, which had been kept secret for years.

The judge, in her sentencing remarks, made it clear that Clarke’s actions warranted a life sentence due to the grave nature of his offenses.

She ordered that he serve a minimum of 11 years before being considered for parole, with the understanding that he would remain on license for the rest of his life once released.

Judge de Bertodano stated, “I am in no doubt you are a continuing danger to the public.

These are the most serious type of sexual offenses it is possible to commit; and it would be quite wrong of me not to denounce that type of offending behavior.” She further acknowledged the bravery of the victims, praising their courage in coming forward and speaking out about their experiences.

“These two girls have been incredibly brave in coming forward and talking to the police about what happened.

I hope they can take some comfort from that and also from your admissions of guilt,” she said.

Prosecutor Andrew Molloy recounted that Clarke was convicted after a trial in February of the previous year, where it was established that he had raped a ten-year-old girl in the early 2000s and again when she was approximately 13.

These crimes were initially uncovered in 2012 when the victim approached the police, distressed by the ongoing impact of her trauma on her personal relationships.

Although police interviewed other girls who had contact with Clarke, no additional offenses were identified at that time.

The case took a significant turn when Clarke, while appealing his sentence, prompted his second victim to come forward.

She revealed that shortly before his arrest for the first victim, Clarke had also targeted her and committed rape.

Following his unsuccessful appeal, Clarke expressed a desire to make admissions during a prison interview, but initially made no comment about his recent offenses.

It was only after learning that the victim had provided a video-recorded statement to the police that Clarke finally admitted to his crimes.

Earlier, in March 2013, Clarke was sentenced to 16 years in prison for raping a schoolgirl a decade earlier.

The victim, now a 20-year-old university student, was praised for her courageous testimony delivered from behind a screen to protect her identity.

She described how the abuse had haunted her for years, affecting her relationships and her ability to move forward.

She also urged other victims to come forward, emphasizing that it is never too late to seek justice.

The court proceedings revealed that Clarke had raped the young girl three times in 2002, twice at his home in Lillington Road and once during a fishing trip in the Coventry area.

After each assault, he gave her money to buy sweets.

The victim recounted that after the second attack, she told Clarke to stop, which marked the end of his abuse.

Clarke claimed to have a “Jekyll and Hyde” personality and blamed his actions on a previous mental breakdown.

However, the investigation, led by Detective Constable Clive Leftwich, confirmed the victim’s account, leading to Clarke’s conviction.

Detective Leftwich praised the victim’s bravery and highlighted the importance of thorough police work in bringing Clarke to justice.

“Despite the victim coming to us 10 years after the offenses were committed, our thorough investigations enabled us to present a compelling case to the jury…and it’s resulted in a unanimous guilty verdict for rapes that have caused her great distress since childhood,” he stated.

The case underscores the importance of victims’ courage in speaking out, regardless of how much time has passed since the abuse occurred.
