PHILIP SELLARS BANNED FROM INTERNET IN MARTON AFTER SEX OFFENCES
In a recent development in the ongoing efforts to combat online sexual offenses, Philip Sellars, a resident of Marton, has been subjected to a court order that prohibits him from accessing the internet. The case came to light after police officers apprehended Sellars at his home, where they discovered electronic devices he was using to engage on dating platforms and social networking sites.Sellars, aged 35 and residing on Colwyn Avenue in Marton, faced charges related to breaching a Sex Offences Prevention Order (SOPO). He pleaded guilty to two separate violations of this court-imposed restriction, which was originally issued following his previous conviction.
The prosecution, led by Alison Quanbrough, outlined that Sellars had a criminal record dating back to December 2010, when he was convicted of creating and possessing indecent images of children. As part of his sentence, he was subjected to a five-year SOPO, which aimed to prevent him from engaging in activities that could facilitate further offenses.
On September 14, police executed a search at Sellars' residence and found an i-Pad Touch among his belongings. During questioning, Sellars admitted to using the device to access dating and social networking sites, activities that were explicitly restricted under his SOPO. His response to the police was stark and revealing, as he reportedly said, “Lock me up – my life is awful,” indicating his awareness of the severity of his situation and perhaps his feelings of despair.
Following his admission and the evidence collected, Sellars was bailed to appear before Preston Crown Court on October 24, where he will face sentencing. The case underscores the ongoing efforts by law enforcement to monitor and restrict individuals with a history of sexual offenses from reoffending, especially through online platforms that can facilitate contact with vulnerable populations.
