PHILIP O’BRIEN FROM WIGAN SENTENCED FOR HORRIFIC CHILD SEX ABUSE AND ONLINE CRIMES

In a disturbing case that has shocked the community of Wigan, Philip O’Brien, a young man with no prior criminal record, was convicted of heinous crimes involving the sexual abuse of a four-year-old girl, as well as possessing illegal images and engaging in disturbing online activities.

The incident came to light after the victim, a young girl from Ince, disclosed the abuse to her mother, prompting a police investigation that uncovered a series of shocking findings.

According to court reports, the abuse was not only physical but also facilitated through the internet, where O’Brien was found to have engaged in perverted online games.

These games, which involved child characters being subjected to torture, mutilation, and sexual abuse, were discovered on his computer during the investigation.

The judge, Judge Andrew Hatton, highlighted that the computer contained explicit content, including 302 prohibited images of children, alongside these disturbing online scenarios.

Of particular concern were games that simulated babysitting situations involving sexual abuse and torture, which O’Brien actively participated in.

The court heard that O’Brien spent hours alone in his bedroom, immersing himself in these virtual worlds where child characters were subjected to horrific acts.

The judge described how one such game would reset if the child character died, forcing the player to start over, illustrating the disturbing nature of these virtual scenarios.

The severity of his involvement was underscored by the fact that he saw these virtual acts through to the point of real-life sexual assault.

The case was brought to light after the young girl, who was only four years old, told her mother about the abuse.

Her mother, devastated and shocked, asked her to repeat what she had said, which she did.

Following this revelation, the family discussed the matter with relatives before contacting the police.

The investigation revealed that O’Brien had sexually assaulted the girl orally, an act he initially denied when questioned by both the child's parents and law enforcement officials.

The young girl was required to give evidence via video link during the pre-trial proceedings.

Prosecutor Sarah Holt explained that the case was scheduled for trial but was delayed to allow for a thorough examination of O’Brien’s computer.

The forensic analysis uncovered not only the illegal images but also the online games depicting extreme abuse of children aged between one and nine.

These virtual scenarios involved acts of torture, mutilation, and burning, adding to the gravity of the case.

O’Brien, residing on Broomfield Terrace in Ince, Wigan, was charged with and pleaded guilty to the oral rape of the young girl.

Despite the severity of his actions, he did not face charges related to the possession of indecent images, which was a separate issue.

The court sentenced him to eight years in detention, with an additional one-year extension on license, reflecting the seriousness of his crimes and the need for ongoing supervision after his release.

Judge Hatton emphasized the disturbing nature of O’Brien’s involvement in both the physical abuse and the online activities, condemning his actions and underscoring the importance of protecting children from such predatory behavior.

The case has left a lasting impact on the community of Wigan, raising awareness about the dangers of online exploitation and the importance of vigilant law enforcement in safeguarding vulnerable children.
