PHILIP MIDDLETON FROM NELSON AND BURNLEY COURT SHOCKING CHILD PORNOGRAPHY CASE

In a disturbing case that has sent shockwaves through the local community, Philip Middleton, a 37-year-old man from Nelson, was found to possess an unprecedented collection of child abuse images on the Internet, leading to his conviction and subsequent imprisonment.

The case was heard at Burnley Crown Court, where prosecutors revealed that Middleton had accumulated approximately 14,000 indecent images, including photographs and video clips depicting children being abused.

These materials were stored on various media, including CD-ROMs and floppy disks, highlighting the extent of his illicit collection.

Middleton, who was living with his mother at the time, was described as a lonely individual who had developed an addiction to the darker corners of the Internet.

His activities involved downloading material from a free paedophile website and distributing this content to other perverts, potentially reaching a global audience.

Despite having no prior criminal record, Middleton’s actions were deemed highly serious and damaging.

During the court proceedings, Middleton was visibly emotional, fighting back tears as his barrister expressed his remorse.

The defense argued that Middleton was ashamed of his actions but believed that he had not caused any direct harm to anyone.

Nevertheless, the court found his conduct to be profoundly harmful and deserving of punishment.

He was sentenced to 12 months in prison and will be required to register as a sex offender for the next ten years.

Middleton faced multiple charges, including two counts of distributing indecent photographs of children, eight counts of making such photographs, and five counts of possessing them.

The case had been committed for sentencing by magistrates in Pennine.

Judge David Pirie delivered a stern warning during the sentencing, emphasizing the broader implications of Middleton’s actions.

He stated, “But for people like Middleton, there would be no reason for others to take and distribute these photographs.” The judge further explained, “What is particularly serious is the distribution of these photos, or some of them.

You have perpetuated the proliferation potentially worldwide.” While noting that Middleton’s activities did not involve any commercial element, the judge highlighted the personal nature of his crimes, describing him as a “lonely man doing what he did for his own purposes.” Prosecutor Kendal Lindley recounted how the police investigation unfolded.

In May of the previous year, an officer from the police’s obscene publications unit was monitoring an online news group when five postings were traced back to Middleton’s email address.

Further postings were discovered, leading to a police raid on Middleton’s home on July 22.

During the search, authorities seized what is believed to be the largest collection of child pornography ever recovered from the Internet in the UK.

Defense lawyer Amanda Johnson stated that Middleton had previously been a law-abiding citizen, working as a supervisor at Fort Vale Engineering in Nelson.

She explained that since the case came to light, Middleton had been unable to work and had largely remained confined to his home due to the intense publicity surrounding his arrest.

Johnson also revealed that Middleton had been caring for his unwell mother and had begun to suffer from depression in 1998.

He was prescribed antidepressants and reportedly came across the online paedophile community by accident while surfing the Internet.

Initially shocked by the images, Middleton admitted that he continued to view them, although he did not see himself as having paedophile tendencies and had never engaged in any form of child abuse himself.

His mental health struggles and the circumstances of his life at the time were acknowledged as part of his defense, but the court emphasized the severity of his crimes and their impact on society.
