PHILIP DALY SENTENCED TO 18 YEARS IN PRISON FOR HORRIFIC ABUSE IN MANCHESTER

Warning: This article contains details that may be upsetting to some readers.

A violent and dangerous rapist, Philip Daly, has been sentenced to 18 years in prison for a prolonged and horrific campaign of physical, sexual, and psychological abuse against his victim in Manchester.

Daly subjected her to degrading acts, including forcing her to have sex with him and another man while she was blindfolded and restrained.

His cruelty also included beating her after episodes of rage, cutting her off from her family and friends, and stealing her money.

The victim described her life as 'a constant black cloud,' expressing that she would never fully recover from what Daly did.

She stated, 'He cannot be helped.

He is not remorseful for his actions.

I will never really get over this ordeal, and in time, someone else is likely to be hurt by him.' During the trial at Minshull Street Crown Court, it was revealed how Daly, 42, inflicted extensive physical, mental, and sexual abuse over several years.

He deliberately isolated her by smashing her phone, ripping up her passport, and confiscating her spending cards.

Daly also physically assaulted her multiple times pushing her against furniture and attacking her with a walking stick when she refused to send him money.

Additionally, he facilitated a 'cash for crash' scheme, encouraging her to make a personal injury claim so he could steal from her.

The court heard chilling accounts of Daly raping her alongside friends acts she felt forced to endure out of fear of further violence.

One specific incident involved him binding her hands, blindfolding her, and then forcing her to have intercourse with himself and another man.

As a result of this abuse, her appearance and health deteriorated, transforming her from a vibrant person into someone suffering weight loss, seizures, and nightmares.

Prosecutor Vanessa Thomson highlighted how Daly belittled and controlled his victim, stripping her of her independence and subjecting her to frequent violence.

She explained, 'He belittled her, controlled her movements, and took her financial independence.

More significantly, there were regular bouts of violence, leading her to seek help from close ones.' Daly’s abuse extended to sexual humiliation, often involving his friends, which was primarily mental but also coercive.

She was also terrified that disobeying him would escalate the violence.

Daly also prevented her from reporting the abuse to police, forcing her to lie about injuries she sustained.

In a powerful victim impact statement, she expressed her ongoing fear, stating, 'I always feel like I need to look over my shoulder.' She described her suffering as 'a life under a constant black cloud,' plagued by nightmares and panic attacks rooted in her trauma.

Daly was convicted in October 2021 of 16 offenses, including eight counts of actual bodily harm, one count of controlling and coercive behaviour, two counts of rape, and five counts related to inciting sexual activity.

Judge Nicholas Clarke QC noted that a psychiatric report indicated Daly lacked awareness of the extent of his harm.

During sentencing, he remarked, 'You claimed you were not guilty, and the report shows you appear to not understand what happened or how you harmed the victim.

You exercised total control over her, enabling your serious offenses.' The judge emphasised that this was a lengthy campaign of violence, control, and rape against a highly vulnerable woman, and though she may one day begin to recover, it will take many years.

Daly’s defence lawyer, Mr.

William Staunton, presented a letter to the court claiming Daly was attempting to show remorse and had attended anger management courses.

The letter stated, 'This is a man who has never been to prison before and understands that a custodial sentence is inevitable.

He fully regrets his actions and accepts responsibility.

He is capable of change and is in a fit, clear state of mind.' Daly, of Trafford, was sentenced to 18 years in prison, with an initial 12 years to serve before being eligible for parole, along with a further five years on license.

Detective Constable Charlotte Morgan of GMP’s Complex Safeguarding Hub commended the victim’s bravery and stated, 'Daly's sustained and deplorable campaign of domestic abuse left the victim feeling like her life would never be the same.

He is clearly a dangerous and very manipulative man and I am pleased he is facing justice.' She also urged anyone suffering from abuse to seek help, emphasising the availability of local services for support with housing, finances, and counselling, and reassuring victims that they do not have to suffer in silence anymore.
