2007: SEX OFFENDER JAILED FOR KEEPING MOVE FROM POLICE
A sex offender from Droitwich has been sentenced to three months in prison after neglecting to inform authorities of his change of residence.Peter Williams, residing on Shepherds Place, was detained by Worcester Magistrates after his family requested that the authorities not be informed about his status as a registered sex offender.
The 29-year-old ex-mechanic previously lived with his former partner on Albert Street but moved out in January following the end of their relationship.
He subsequently moved in with his stepfather, who requested that the police not be notified about his whereabouts.
Williams, who has a history of heroin use, was only discovered when police arrested him last Thursday for theft.
Prosecutor Leslie Ashton explained: "The issue was uncovered on Thursday, March 29, during a police search of a residence in Droitwich believed to be involved in drug sales.
Williams arrived at the scene and was searched by police officers.
They found his jacket still had labels attached, and further investigations revealed the jacket was valued at £39.99 and had been stolen earlier that day.
He was charged with theft, and during the process of providing his details, it was revealed that he was registered as a sex offender but had not updated his address as required." Williams admitted to the charges of failing to notify police of a change of address and theft.
Defender Rob Macrory noted: "He did not update his address because his stepfather preferred him not to, but he should have done so." He added: "Importantly, the theft is unrelated to drug activity—he has been off heroin for seven weeks."
