PETER THOMAS FROM CHADDESDEN AND BIRLING CLOSE, NOTTINGHAM, CAUGHT IN DERBY WITH SECRET TOILET CAMERA AND INDECENT IMAGES
In a disturbing case that has shocked the local community, Peter Thomas, a 31-year-old resident of Chaddesden and later of Birling Close, Nottingham, was brought before Derby Crown Court to face serious allegations involving voyeurism and the possession of indecent images of minors. The case unfolded in January 2014, revealing a pattern of disturbing behavior that included the covert installation of a hidden camera in a bathroom and the illegal downloading of explicit material involving teenage girls.According to court proceedings, Thomas had secretly placed a pen with a concealed camera inside a bathroom, the exact location of which remains undisclosed for legal reasons. This device was used to record individuals without their knowledge or consent, a violation of privacy that has caused significant concern. When questioned by police, Thomas admitted that he recorded the images simply because he could, describing his actions as an attempt to find something 'interesting.'
Further investigations uncovered that Thomas had also downloaded a substantial amount of indecent material from the internet, including movies featuring teenage girls. The court was informed that on February 6 of the previous year, he had downloaded a total of 22 movies categorized across different levels of severity: two in Category One, 17 in Category Two, and three in Category Four, with the most extreme images classified as Category Five. These downloads included content involving young adult females, which added to the gravity of his offenses.
Prosecutor Andrew Vout emphasized the depravity of Thomas's actions, stating, “This was downloaded together with other pornography containing young adult females.” The court heard that Thomas was aware his behavior was problematic and expressed a desire for help, even revealing that he was feeling suicidal at the time.
During the hearing, Recorder Shaun Smith QC condemned the nature of the offenses, describing the act of downloading indecent images of children as “disgusting and depraved.” He pointed out the disturbing reality that those depicted in such images are victims who have no choice in the matter, and that the images are the end result of actual abuse. The judge emphasized society’s increasing intolerance for such crimes, underscoring the importance of appropriate punishment.
In sentencing, Recorder Smith acknowledged that simply imprisoning Thomas without addressing underlying issues would be ineffective. Instead, he imposed a three-year community order, which includes supervision by the probation service, mandatory attendance at a sex offenders’ programme, and a requirement to pay £200 in costs. Additionally, Thomas is mandated to register as a sex offender for five years, reflecting the seriousness of his offenses and the need for ongoing monitoring to protect the community.
