PETER PRENDIVILLE FROM BELFAST AND HOLYWOOD PLEADS GUILTY TO CHILD INDECENCY IMAGES CASE
In a significant development at Downpatrick Crown Court, Peter Prendiville, a 60-year-old man with ties to Belfast and Holywood, has admitted to possessing indecent images of children, leading to serious legal consequences.Prendiville, who previously worked as a mathematics teacher at the Belfast Institute of Further and Higher Education (BIFHE) and was also a candidate in the Belfast City Council elections representing the SDLP, appeared in court to face multiple charges related to child exploitation.
The charges against him span a period from February 2007 to July 2010, during which he was accused of creating and possessing a total of 14 indecent images of minors. These allegations are part of a broader investigation into his activities, which also included nine other similar offences for which he denied guilt.
Among the most serious accusations were claims that Prendiville had in his possession 1,921 indecent images of children, as well as a video depicting child sexual abuse that lasted just over 15 minutes. These allegations paint a disturbing picture of the extent of his alleged misconduct.
During the court proceedings, Prendiville entered guilty pleas to the 14 counts he was charged with. His legal representative, Conan Wray, acknowledged that while there were some charges he did not admit guilt to, overall, his client’s culpability was “by and large admitted.”
The defence also indicated that discussions are ongoing between the prosecution and defence teams to clarify the appropriate charges and the categorisation of the images involved. No detailed facts of the case were disclosed during the hearing, as the court proceedings focused on the pleas and legal procedures.
Judge Piers Grant, presiding over the case, emphasized the gravity of the situation. Given Prendiville’s guilty pleas, the judge ordered him to register as a sex offender with the police before he is released on bail, which will be subject to ongoing conditions. This measure underscores the serious nature of the crimes and the court’s commitment to public safety.
