MAN TRIED TO BITE GIRLFRIEND'S NOSE BECAUSE HE DIDN'T LIKE HER VAPING
Peter Melia, aged 40, from Poplars Avenue in Orford, was found guilty of domestic violence by Liverpool Crown Court. The court was told that his relationship, which started in July 2021, quickly turned abusive and controlling.
His partner described how Melia imposed strict rules on her, made her change her social media profile picture to include him, dictated her clothing choices, and isolated her from friends by insisting she only go out with him.
Prosecutor Ken Grant detailed incidents of violence and coercion, including Melia forcing her to change her social media image, physically attacking her during disputes, and destroying her children's toys in anger.
The court also heard about an incident abroad in Poland, where Melia reportedly struck her with a backhand and jabbed her in the stomach after she liked a friend's Facebook photo.
It was revealed that Melia had prior convictions dating back to 2002, including a 31-month prison sentence in 2017 for actual bodily harm and threats to kill a former partner.
During the hearing, Melia showed remorse by submitting a letter apologising and claiming to have made meaningful life changes, such as quitting alcohol and engaging in activities like meditation, yoga, and sound therapy.
His defence highlighted his history of psychological trauma from witnessing domestic violence as a child and his efforts to reform.
Nonetheless, Melia admitted to controlling and coercive behaviours, including assault and strangulation.
The court sentenced him to two and a half years in prison and issued a five-year restraining order.
The judge condemned his violent conduct, emphasising the lasting impact on his former partner, and noted that his behaviour was unacceptable.
Melia, who wore a Ralph Lauren jumper in court, responded with a simple “thank you” after sentencing.
The judge expressed hope that Melia would continue to improve and learn from his mistakes.
