SEX OFFENDER HANDED HIMSELF IN TO POLICE SIX YEARS AFTER GROOMING SCHOOLGIRL
A sex offender surrendered himself to authorities six years after sexually abusing a schoolgirl he had groomed.John Bailey enticed the girl and her friends to his flat after purchasing vapes and alcohol for them, then kissed and inappropriately touched one of the children.
The investigation into Bailey’s actions was initially dropped in 2020 but was reopened when he contacted police during an 'existential crisis'.
He was later charged with child sexual assault and appeared via video-link from HMP Altcourse at Liverpool Crown Court yesterday, Tuesday.
The court heard that the assault occurred in February 2020 and involved a 12-year-old girl.
Prosecutor David Watson explained that in 2020, staff at the girl’s school contacted Cheshire Police after the victim reported a sexual assault.
During her interview, she stated she and her friends visited Bailey’s flat after he bought them cigarettes, vapes, and alcohol.
While there, she said Bailey kissed her and touched her thigh, prompting his arrest the following day.
Bailey did not comment during police questioning, and the girl later withdrew her complaint, leading to no further action at that time.
However, in March 2026, Bailey called Cheshire Police, referencing the investigation and admitting that he had kissed the girl’s neck.
He explained that his mental health struggles led to his confession, which he elaborated on during an interview.
Bailey claimed he attempted to kiss the victim, but she moved away, and he only managed to kiss her neck.
He also admitted to trying twice to touch her inappropriately under her clothing—she pushed him away both times, but he overpowered her on a third occasion, touching her for two to three seconds.
During the interview, Bailey denied having any sexual interest in children.
Prosecutor Watson highlighted Bailey’s criminal history, noting he has 21 previous convictions covering 31 offences, none of which are sexual.
Defense lawyer Jim Smith called the case ‘unusual’ because Bailey voluntarily contacted police after the investigation concluded, citing a mental health or existential crisis.
Smith described Bailey as a vulnerable individual and remarked that his honesty in confessing was rare.
Before sentencing, Judge Anil Murray stated that the case was less about substance abuse and more about grooming behavior.
He emphasized that Bailey invited a 12-year-old girl back to his flat, offering vapes and alcohol—a clear example of grooming.
The judge acknowledged Bailey’s remorseful conduct, including turning himself in and confessing, which he considered a mitigating factor.
Nonetheless, Judge Murray sentenced Bailey to 20 months’ imprisonment to begin immediately.
Additionally, Bailey must register as a sex offender for the next decade and follow a sexual harm prevention order for five years.
