EX-DETECTIVE INSPECTOR FACES JAIL AFTER ASSAULT RECORD SURFACES
A former police officer, Paul Swinburne, is facing imprisonment after his wife, Anne Swinburne, recorded a violent incident involving him during their 25-year marriage.Anne, who described being repeatedly beaten and subjected to bullying by Swinburne, a retired detective inspector, sought assistance from Women’s Aid after feeling that law enforcement officers would not believe her.
Swinburne, who is 55 years old, was taken into custody publicly at a celebration marking his 35 years in policing, in front of former colleagues.
Court documents from Hamilton Sheriff Court indicated that their marriage had already ended prior to an incident in August, and Anne had been living in a caravan in Ayr, funded by Swinburne’s pension.
During the court hearing, it was revealed that Swinburne had pushed her against a sofa and taunted her when he noticed she was recording him, with his behavior characterized by anger and swearing.
The recording, which Sheriff Marie Smart described as the worst she had heard in court, contributed to his conviction for assault.
The sentencing was postponed until the following month.
