Ethan Allan, age 24, attacked the woman at a property located in Glasgow's Townhead neighborhood on December 8, 2022.
The incident was set up when a friend asked the woman to execute the joke while Allan was sleeping and to send a photo of the prank to her.
Allan became furious upon receiving the picture, which was later sent by the same friend, and responded by head-butting the woman and accusing her of cheating.
At Glasgow Sheriff Court, Allan admitted to engaging in a pattern of abusive behavior towards a partner or ex-partner.
Court records revealed that the couple had been together for four months before Allan's incarceration in September 2022.
They reunited in November 2022, but a week later, an argument erupted during which Allan threatened to stab her.
In the following days, Allan continued to make threats, including ones to kill the woman.
On December 8, while they were drinking together, Allan fell asleep.
Prosecutor Darren Harty explained that the woman was texting a friend, who suggested using glue and taking a picture.
Following this advice, she stuck a piece of pizza to Allan's face with sellotape and sent a photo to her friend, who shared it with Allan.
When Allan saw the image upon waking, he became upset, stood up, and head-butted her.
He then punched the television causing it to break and kicked a bedside table.
Additionally, he yelled at the woman, accusing her of seeing other men.
On New Year's Eve, Allan threw bottles around the house after which the woman called him a "beast." Three days later, an argument occurred again, with Allan throwing bottles and accusing her of scratching his hand.
During this altercation, he punched her, breaking two of her front teeth.
Afterwards, Allan apologized, claiming his actions were reflexive.
He also criticized her choice of clothing in front of friends and ordered her to change, forcing her to cover herself with a blanket and accompany him bathroom each time he went, to prevent her from being alone with his friends.
Furthermore, Allan located prescription medication meant for her anxiety but refused to give it to her, knowing she relied on it more when feeling anxious.
Defense lawyer Harvie Diamond stated that Allan was upset about the prank involving the pizza, but acknowledged that this did not justify his violent response and that he accepted responsibility.
Upon release from prison, Allan was subject to a five-year non-harassment order that restricts him from contacting the woman.
