BELFAST MAN JAILED FOR BROTHER'S MANSLAUGHTER AFTER HALLUCINATING OVER ALIEN TAKEOVER
Paul McMillan, a 44-year-old man from Belfast, was found guilty of manslaughter by reason of diminished responsibility for the stabbing death of his brother William. The court was told that despite the sentence of three years in prison, McMillan was released on immediate probation because he had already served the equivalent time on remand.
Mr Justice Hart warned him that any failure to follow probation terms or relapse into drinking would lead to re-imprisonment.
McMillan, a former Prison Officer, had initially faced charges of murder but pleaded guilty due to evidence from psychiatric reports which concluded he was suffering from delirium tremens at the time of the killing and was hallucinating, unable to understand his actions.
The court heard that both brothers were heavy drinkers, with records showing McMillan consuming up to a litre of spirits daily.
On the day of the incident, police reports state neighbors saw him behaving bizarrely and walking up to a car with a blood-covered arm, claiming, “I done him, he is dead.” Police found William sitting in an armchair with severe stab wounds.
The judge emphasized that McMillan believed his brother’s body had been taken over by aliens, which negated his capacity to comprehend his actions during the killing.
The court stressed that McMillan must abstain from alcohol to prevent further incidents.
