PAUL MAHONEY FROM LINDLEY ESCAPES JAIL DESPITE LIBRARY OF CHILD PORNOGRAPHY DISCOVERED

In April 2010, Bradford Crown Court heard a disturbing case involving Paul Mahoney, a 43-year-old resident of Lindley, who was found to possess an extensive collection of indecent images of children. Despite the severity of his actions, Mahoney was not sentenced to immediate imprisonment but was instead subjected to a supervision order with strict conditions and required to participate in a sex offender rehabilitation program.

Investigations revealed that Mahoney had been secretly downloading and storing a vast array of child pornography within his home on Cadogan Avenue, Lindley. The court was informed that his collection included thousands of images and videos depicting minors in various states of undress and engaged in sexual acts. Police monitoring his internet activity uncovered more than 10,000 indecent images and films, alongside over 30,000 other photographs of children that did not contain nudity but still contributed to the disturbing nature of his collection.

Judge Jonathan Rose, presiding over the case, expressed his concern about Mahoney’s psychological state and the nature of his offenses. During the hearing, it was revealed that Mahoney’s sexual attraction to children reportedly began after he saw a young actress in the film "Mrs. Doubtfire." He also admitted to fantasizing about how he would handle naughty children while watching the television program "Supernanny."

When police officers tracked down Mahoney and seized his computer equipment, they discovered the extensive library of depravity, which the judge described as a “library of depravity.” The investigation extended beyond his computer, uncovering additional pornography stored on external hard drives, CDs, and DVDs. The court was told that Mahoney had also expressed fantasies about children he had seen in his local area, although there was no evidence to suggest he had ever approached or harmed any minors directly.

Judge Rose emphasized the disturbing nature of Mahoney’s case, stating, “That of course is one of the most troubling features of this case—that you derive sexual pleasure from the sight of a child, whether clothed or naked, whether innocently or sexually posed. That is why you are in my view a dangerous person.”

During the proceedings, Mahoney appeared visibly distressed, and the judge remarked that he doubted Mahoney had ever shown remorse for the children who had suffered due to his actions. The court also learned that Mahoney’s first sexual act involved a prostitute who resembled a child in appearance and dress, further indicating the long-standing nature of his deviant behavior.

Despite admitting to multiple offenses related to the possession of indecent images, the judge noted that the sentencing guidelines would typically recommend a prison term of nine to twelve months. However, Judge Rose chose not to impose immediate imprisonment, citing concerns about the effectiveness of incarceration in this case. Instead, Mahoney was sentenced to a supervision order with strict controls, including mandatory attendance at a sex offender program and an indefinite sexual offences prevention order that restricts his internet access.

Furthermore, Mahoney is required to register as a sex offender for five years. The judge warned that if Mahoney committed any further sexual offenses involving children, the court would consider the case as no longer subject to the current guidelines, potentially leading to an indeterminate prison sentence aimed at protecting the public from him. Judge Rose concluded by emphasizing the importance of safeguarding children, stating, “Whilst the public might be disappointed that you don’t receive a long prison sentence, I have a wider duty—and that duty is to attempt to protect children from you.”

Neil Murphy, representing Mahoney, described his client as a man who had previously lived in isolation, spiraling into a pattern of increasingly harmful behavior. Murphy added that Mahoney’s sister had disowned him, he had lost his employment, and he was now a very isolated and pathetic individual, highlighting the tragic and disturbing nature of his case.
