PAUL KNAPPETT'S BRUTAL MURDER OF TEENAGER IN HARTLEPOOL SHOCKS COMMUNITY

In a tragic and shocking incident that has left the community of Hartlepool reeling, a 30-year-old man named Paul Knappett has been convicted of the murder of a 16-year-old girl named Kimberley. The heinous crime took place in April at the residence she shared with her mother on Troutpool Close, a quiet street in Hartlepool.

Kimberley, a young girl with promising aspirations, was found to have been stabbed more than 20 times while she was peacefully sleeping on a sofa within her home. The attack was so ferocious that she sustained multiple wounds on her arms and hands as she attempted to defend herself, but ultimately, she was overwhelmed by her assailant. The brutal nature of the assault shocked everyone who knew her, and the details of the attack have left a lasting scar on the local community.

Initially, Paul Knappett denied any involvement in Kimberley's death. However, as the trial was approaching, he changed his plea and admitted to the murder. The case was heard at Teesside Crown Court, where the court was told that Knappett was under the influence of a mixture of amphetamines and diazepam at the time of the attack. Despite his claims of amnesia regarding the incident, the court found sufficient evidence to convict him.

Judge Christopher Batty sentenced Knappett to life imprisonment, with a minimum term of 16 and a half years before he could be considered for parole. The court also heard that there was no clear motive for the killing, but it was suggested that Knappett may have mistaken Kimberley for her mother, Paula Hanley, who usually slept on the same sofa. On the night of the attack, Miss Hanley was feeling unwell, which led Kimberley to sleep in her place, possibly creating the tragic confusion.

Further context revealed that Knappett had a history of disputes with Kimberley's family, particularly with her mother, which might have contributed to the violence. The court was told that the argument between Knappett and the family had occurred months prior to the murder, and this could have been a motivating factor, although no definitive motive was established.

Kimberley's mother, Paula Hanley, issued a heartfelt statement through Cleveland Police, describing her daughter as a bright and cheerful young girl whose personality uplifted everyone around her. She shared that Kimberley had high ambitions of becoming a social worker, having worked diligently to pass her GCSEs and pursue a BTEC National Diploma—steps she believed would bring her closer to her dream of helping children.

Detective Superintendent Tony Hutchinson expressed his condemnation of the violence, emphasizing that despite past disagreements, it was Knappett's brutal act of violence that ended Kimberley's promising life. He remarked that the community would be affected for a long time as they tried to come to terms with the tragedy, and that nothing could undo the damage caused by this horrific murder.
