MAN FOUND GUILTY OF RAPE AT NEWPORT CROWN COURT
A jury has found a man guilty of rape after he attacked a woman and told her he was "enjoying it" while ignoring her pleas for him to stop. The verdict was returned on Wednesday following a trial at Newport Crown Court which began on Monday, January 5.
It was the prosecution's case that during the attack the woman asked Paul Hallisey: “Did you know that’s rape?" To which Hallisey responded "is it?" and then continued.
It was heard how the victim had “made it clear”, both “verbally and physically”, that she did not want to engage with him by repeatedly saying: “No, I’m tired,” and turning away from him.
But the court heard Hallisey - who turned 34 on Tuesday - continued to hassle the victim before he inserted his finger inside of her and went on to rape her.
All the while the woman was trapped underneath him crying, it was heard.
The jury were shown a series of texts exchanged between the victim and Hallisey.
In them the woman wrote: "You raped me… You waited for me to fall asleep… You thought I was asleep.” During the exchange the jury were presented with texts from Hallisey which stated: “Don’t chat sh**.” In response to further texts from the woman he responded: “Why didn’t you punch me or something?
I seriously can’t remember this… I’m sorry, I can’t remember.” Hallisey denied the charge of rape brought against him and claimed: "We had intercourse consensually." However, Hallisey, of Heol y Berllan, Caerau, Cardiff, was found guilty of rape.
Addressing the defendant recorder Aiden Eardley said: "You have been found guilty of this charge of rape.
I must remand you in custody.
Sentencing will take place on February 10."
