MAN JAILED FOR 'APPALLING ASSAULT' ON WOMAN IN GLASGOW
A man has been jailed for attacking a woman who pretended to be pregnant in a bid to halt the "appalling assault".
Paul Coulter, 33, beat and strangled the woman, whom he knew, at her home in the east of Glasgow on 1 January 2015.
The High Court in Edinburgh heard he later took the woman to hospital but was caught after she told a nurse who had assaulted her.
Coulter was jailed for three years and nine months after being convicted of assault to severe injury.
He will also be supervised for a year after his release.
During the trial, the victim told the court: "I told him I was pregnant to stop him from hitting me." She was asked if Coulter had said anything and replied: "You have probably lost it anyway." The assault victim, who was not pregnant, said: "I didn't know what to do.
I had never been in a situation like that before." Judge Lord Boyd told Coulter: "You detained her in her own flat and subjected her to what was really an appalling assault." The judge accepted Coulter had taken the woman to hospital afterwards but emphasized the seriousness of the assault.
Lord Boyd also pointed out Coulter had previously been jailed in Ireland for a similar offence.
