OFFENDER PATRICK WALSH INVOLVED IN DOMESTIC ABUSE AND NEGLECTING PROTECTIVE EFFORTS
Patrick Walsh has been accused of multiple forms of domestic abuse, including financial control, emotional manipulation, and physical violence.During the inquest into Jessie Laverack’s death, witnesses reported that Walsh had allegedly grabbed Jessie by the throat and strangled her, resulting in her losing consciousness.
Walsh has consistently denied these claims and has never been convicted, although he was charged with assault related to an incident on May 13, 2017.
No further legal action was taken after Jessie withdrew her statement.
Evidence at the inquest indicated that Walsh located Jessie at her new flat following their separation and threatened to take her dog, Achilles, which left Jessie feeling terrified and afraid to leave her home.
Walsh stated that they loved each other deeply and that their relationship resumed by January 2018, but her family questioned this, noting her worsening mental health amid ongoing abuse.
Walsh appeared at the inquest, and his presence and alleged abusive behavior were linked to her tragic death.
The hearing also revealed significant failures by support agencies, which were criticized for not offering sufficient protection.
A report aimed at preventing future fatalities related to domestic violence was scheduled for release to improve case handling.
Jessie was described as an energetic, artistic woman who cared greatly for animals and dreamed of beginning a new career with Guide Dogs for the Blind.
She faced multiple complex challenges, including anxiety, dyslexia, night terrors, a fear of leaving her home, and severe alcohol dependence—all of which were heightened by her experiences of domestic violence.
The inquest highlighted the crucial need for better support for domestic abuse victims and showcased the devastating consequences such violence can have.
