IAN WALPOLE FROM BEVERLEY SENTENCED FOR CHILD SEX OFFENCES

A disgraced former police inspector has narrowly avoided jail after a court heard he stockpiled hundreds of sickening child abuse images while serving as a senior officer.

Ian Walpole, 43, once described as having a “long and impressive” policing career, was found with 246 indecent images and videos of children across two mobile phones.

The offences came to light after a separate investigation in Scotland uncovered child abuse material sent to a contact saved as “Ian”.

The former Humberside officer was arrested in July 2024.

Examinations of his devices revealed some of the most serious Category A images, alongside lengthy videos depicting the sexual abuse of children, including footage involving a 12-year-old boy.

At Lincoln Crown Court this week, Walpole was handed a six-month prison sentence, suspended for 21 months, after pleading guilty to three counts of making indecent images of children.

The judge made clear that Walpole’s fall from grace was entirely self-inflicted.

Despite more than two decades in uniform and reaching the rank of inspector, the court said he had chosen to throw it all away.

The recorder told the court that few people could claim greater awareness of the devastating harm caused by child abuse images than a serving police officer.

He stressed that such material represents real children being abused, regardless of where in the world the offences take place.

Prosecutors detailed how Walpole’s iPhone 11 contained dozens of illegal images and videos, including multiple Category A files.

A second device, an iPhone SE, held even more — with over 150 illegal files recovered.

Several of the videos were described as extreme, and attempts to delete or conceal material were treated as an aggravating factor.

The prosecution warned that Walpole’s actions risked damaging public trust in policing, saying his crimes had the potential to undermine confidence in the police as a whole.

In mitigation, the defence said Walpole had no previous convictions and had undertaken self-funded courses to address his offending.

The court was told he had lost his career, his income, and his standing among colleagues and friends following the publicity around the case.

His lawyer claimed work-related stress played a role in the offending and said Walpole had experienced suicidal thoughts since his arrest.

She added that he had retrained as an HGV driver and hoped to rebuild his life once the case concluded.

The judge acknowledged there were significant mitigating factors, including the delay in sentencing and Walpole’s efforts to seek help.

However, he was blunt in his assessment, stating that every consequence Walpole now faced was the result of his own actions.

The recorder said he was “only just” persuaded not to send Walpole straight to prison, describing the material as “revolting” but concluding that immediate custody was not unavoidable due to the prospects of rehabilitation.

In addition to the suspended sentence, Walpole was made subject to a Sexual Harm Prevention Order.

He must also complete 50 days of rehabilitation work and 100 hours of unpaid labour.

Following sentencing, Humberside Police issued a statement condemning Walpole’s conduct.

Deputy Chief Constable Sarah Baker said the former inspector’s actions were “sickening and inexcusable” and stood in direct opposition to the duty of officers to protect the most vulnerable.

She stressed that any criminal behaviour by police officers, particularly offences involving children, would not be tolerated and assured the public that those who break the law would be identified and removed from the force.
