CONVICTED RAPIST AND VIOLENT OFFENDER PATRICK RYAN LIGHTBAND RELEASED FROM PRISON
A man convicted of multiple serious offences, including rape and attempted murder, has been released from prison and is reportedly residing once again in the Edinburgh and East Lothian area.Patrick Ryan Lightband, who also uses the alias Ryan Payton, was sentenced to five years’ imprisonment at Edinburgh High Court in December 2020.
He was also placed on the Sex Offenders Register for life.
Born on 31 May 2000 in Edinburgh’s Simpsons Hospital and originally from Wallyford, East Lothian, Lightband attended Musselburgh Grammar School and was previously residing at 51-53 Newhaven Place, Edinburgh (EH6 4TX).
His criminal history is extensive and includes a pattern of violent, coercive, and sexually abusive behaviour against both women and members of the public.
According to court documents and media reports, Lightband was found guilty under the Sexual Offences (Scotland) Act 2003 and the Criminal Attempts (Scotland) Act 1981, following a series of harrowing attacks.
The case involved video evidence of sexual assaults, which had been posted online and used as part of the prosecution's evidence.
This included incidents where the victim was drugged, sexually assaulted, and filmed without consent.
One particularly disturbing account involves Lightband's repeated physical and sexual abuse of a woman while she was pregnant with twins.
It is alleged that he kidnapped her, locked her in hotel rooms, broke into her home, and physically assaulted her—causing the loss of her pregnancy.
Injuries included a broken eye socket, a severely damaged nose, and head trauma after being pushed down a staircase.
Lightband’s behaviour escalated further with stalking and psychological abuse.
Reports state that he ignored bail conditions and a restraining order imposed in 2016, continuing to appear at the victim’s address and threatening self-harm.
The prolonged abuse resulted in the victim being forced to move house four times.
He was also convicted of other offences including the robbery and physical assault of an elderly woman, as well as public incidents involving weapons.
According to articles published in the East Lothian Courier, Lightband was seen brandishing a knife and shouting threats at members of the public in Musselburgh on multiple occasions.
Police later found him in an agitated state inside his home after he had reportedly chased a group of young people while armed with a blade.
In another court hearing, it was revealed that he had carried weapons on multiple occasions for what his solicitor claimed was self-protection.
However, the volume and seriousness of his offences suggest a longstanding pattern of unlawful and dangerous conduct.
He has also been banned from keeping animals due to reported incidents of cruelty.
Despite the gravity of these crimes, Lightband has now been released and is reportedly back in the community.
His release has raised serious concerns among local residents and victims, particularly due to the lifelong notification requirements placed upon him under the Sexual Offences legislation.
Members of the public who may have concerns or come into contact with Patrick Ryan Lightband are advised to remain cautious and report any breaches of his conditions directly to Police Scotland.
