NEWPORT MAN JAILED FOR BRUTAL ASSAULT AFTER WOMAN REFUSED SEX
A MAN brutally assaulted a woman he had just met in a nightclub after she refused to have sex with him.Oswaldson Small, 36, continually hit her at her home after they had left Mojos in Newport during the early hours of Friday, July 4.
The attack took place when she told him she didn’t want to have sex with him.
Judge Shomon Khan told the defendant that the pictures he had seen of the victim’s injuries were “troubling”.
She suffered a black eye as well as bruising and swelling to the left side of her face after Small struck her 20 to 25 times with “repeated blows”.
The defendant had refused to leave the woman’s home even after the police were called.
The woman was taken to hospital for treatment.
In a victim impact statement read at Cardiff Crown Court, she revealed that the attack has had a profound effect on her.
Small, of Pickle Line Road, Newport pleaded guilty to assault occasioning actual bodily harm.
The defendant was also being sentenced for an act of violence committed against arcade supervisor Anthony Williams in Newport on Saturday, June 8 last year.
Small had swung a punch at the employee while he had been asked to calm down during a “confrontation” he was having with his own friends.
He was found guilty in his absence at the city’s magistrates’ court of assault by beating and of failing to surrender.
Small has no previous convictions.
His barrister Paul Hewitt said his client was a “family man” who is married and cares for the couple’s child.
It was urged on the defendant’s behalf that a suspended prison sentence could be imposed and that he could be rehabilitated in the community.
Judge Khan disagreed.
He told Small of the assault on the woman: “These are severe injuries.” The defendant was jailed for two years and told he would serve half of that sentence in custody before being released on licence.
The time he has spent remanded in custody since his arrest in the summer will count towards that term.
The court heard that Small is not a British citizen and could be deported after his release from prison.
