ABUSIVE EX-BOYFRIEND FINALLY SENTENCED AFTER YEARS OF DELAYS
An individual named Nikki Brown, aged 39, has been convicted of sending offensive and abusive text messages to his former partner. The case experienced over two years of delays due to repeated court absences and plea changes.
Brown initially denied the charges in June 2019 but later pleaded guilty in March 2020 before withdrawing that plea in September 2020.
Despite the withdrawal, he was convicted of the crime of breaching the Communications Act 2003 and the Abusive Behaviour and Sexual Harm (Scotland) Act 2016, which involved persistently sending abusive texts.
Brown’s trial was postponed multiple times and he failed to appear on several occasions, leading to warrants and eventual remand.
During the sentencing, Sheriff Lesley Johnston imposed a fine of £900, considering the time he had already spent in custody, which equated to a two-month sentence.
Brown was also subject to a one-year non-harassment order preventing him from approaching or contacting his victim.
The case was criticized by the Scottish Conservative shadow justice secretary Jamie Greene MSP, highlighting procedural delays and questioning the adequacy of the sentence, which effectively allowed Brown to walk away scot-free after significant no-shows and delays.
The victim and public response emphasized the trauma caused by Brown’s behaviour and court absences.
