SCARBOROUGH DRIVING INSTRUCTOR GUILTY OF MURDER
Nigel Pickard, a 45-year-old driving instructor living on Filey Road in Scarborough, was convicted of the murder of his former partner, Laura Smith, who was 29 years old.The fatal event took place in July when Pickard allegedly attacked Miss Smith by grabbing her around the neck in front of their daughter, Olivia, causing her to lose consciousness.
Laura passed away the next day.
Leeds Crown Court handed down a life sentence to Pickard, requiring him to serve a minimum of 15 years before being eligible for parole.
The court was informed that Pickard had harbored feelings of bitterness and resentment following their separation in May, particularly after Laura became pregnant in December with their child.
Judge Scott Wolstenhome pointed out that Pickard’s resentful attitude and the assault on Laura in front of their daughter were considered aggravating circumstances.
During the proceedings, Laura’s parents issued a statement expressing their relief at the guilty verdict and mourning the tragic death of their daughter and granddaughter.
The case highlighted the devastating consequences of a fractured relationship and Pickard’s violent conduct towards Laura.
