2007: A woman who escaped to the United States after assaulting an 11-month-old infant has received a life sentence.
Nicola Radford, 21 years old and residing on Haweswater Avenue in the Higher Ince area of Wigan, was convicted of four charges of causing grievous bodily harm at Liverpool Crown Court earlier this week.
Radford, who was caring for the baby at the time, fled to America upon learning that police intended to question her in November 2004.
She was subsequently deported from the United States under immigration regulations and returned to Manchester under escort.
During her trial, Radford confessed to covering the baby’s mouth and stopping his breathing on three separate occasions, as well as pulling his right leg and fracturing it.
She explained that her actions were driven by the baby crying and her inability to calm him down, asserting that she had no intention of injuring him.
The court sentenced her to life imprisonment for each of the charges, with all sentences to run concurrently.
The judge also recommended she serve a minimum of 42 months in prison and prohibited her from working with children.
