WARRINGTON BULLY WHO CONTROLLED GIRLFRIEND'S LIFE HAS BEEN JAILED
A BULLY who controlled where his girlfriend went, who she socialised with and what she wore has been jailed.Nicholas Winter, who has abused three separate partners, had ‘rules’ which he expected his 20-year-old girlfriend at the time to follow.
While appearing for sentence at Liverpool Crown Court on Friday, Judge Gary Woodall told Winter, 34, how he is ‘toxic’.
Prosecuting, Frank Dillon said the defendant and victim met at a homeless shelter in Warrington.
He said that the victim was being pestered by other men in the shelter, but Winter ‘took her under his wing’.
The court heard how the girl thought she was in love with Winter until she found out what he was like.
Mr Dillon said how Winter controlled where she went and who she saw and made her delete some of her contacts and her Snapchat account.
He controlled her phone.
He also said how he controlled what she wore and would buy clothes for her to wear.
He’d call her a slag and slut and say she was only wearing certain things for other men to see.
Winter also made threats of violence, including that he would pour boiling water over her.
He persistently degraded and humiliated her.
Winter has committed 27 previous offences – including ones of abuse against three separate partners.
Defending, Winter’s barrister said: “He does express remorse for his behaviour in committing this offence and recognises that he should have walked away or just left the relationship entirely.
“There is further work that needs to be done to address his behaviour.” Concluding, Judge Woodall said: “You and the victim were in a relationship that was blighted by your behaviour towards her.
“You were toxic because of your jealousy and paranoia.
“You controlled her movement, told her where she was allowed to go and who she was allowed to socialise with.
“You confirmed to your probation officer that you had rules that you expected her to follow.
“I have read just how vile some of your comments were to her and heard of how abusive and demeaning you were.
-Because of your behaviour towards her she has been forced to leave Warrington.
Your probation officer noted that you have an entrenched pattern of abusive behaviour in intimate relationships.
Winter was handed 31 months behind bars.
He is also subjected to a 10-year restraining order.
