NICHOLAS BATEMAN SENTENCED IN RHONDDA CYNON TAFF FOR SHAKEN BABY CRIME
A mother named Natasha, aged 27, has shared her feelings of relief following the sentencing of her former partner, Nicholas Bateman, aged 31, for a violent incident involving her seven-week-old son in 2018. The heartbreaking event took place while Natasha was away attending a medical appointment, leaving her unaware of the severity of what was happening to her child. Bateman, who was responsible for the baby's care during her absence, falsely claimed that the injuries sustained by the infant were simply the result of a bump on his lip. However, medical examinations conducted after the incident painted a very different picture. Doctors found multiple fractures in the child's bones and bleeding on his brain, which are consistent with shaken baby syndrome, a form of severe child abuse. The injuries inflicted on the infant resulted in significant and lasting damage. The baby was diagnosed with cerebral palsy, a neurological disorder that affects movement and coordination. He now suffers from seizures and has difficulty talking, walking, or standing without assistance. Additionally, he experiences sleep disturbances and has a low threshold for pain, making daily life challenging for both him and his mother.
Despite initially denying any involvement and attempting to live a normal life afterward, Bateman eventually pleaded guilty to causing grievous bodily harm with intent. His plea led to a sentencing at Merthyr Tydfil Crown Court on 4 May, where he was handed a prison term of 10 years and nine months. The presiding judge described Bateman’s actions as 'violent' and remarked that he was 'scared to admit what he had done,' highlighting the severity and brutality of the crime.
Natasha expressed her feelings about the justice served, stating that although she is grateful that Bateman has been held accountable, she believes that no amount of prison time could truly compensate for what her son has endured. She recounted the ongoing emotional and physical toll the incident has taken on her family. Natasha also shared her experiences of being falsely accused and judged by neighbors, which added to her distress during a difficult period. Despite these hardships, she remains steadfast in her love and dedication to her son’s future. She concluded with a heartfelt promise: 'I’ll take care of him for the rest of his life,' reaffirming her commitment to her child's well-being and recovery.
