BRIDGET DAVIDSON OF TREORCHY SENTENCED FOR HORRIFIC ANIMAL CRUELTY IN CWMPARC
Bridget Louise Davidson, born on October 28, 1972, and residing on Treharne Street in Treorchy, was found guilty of causing unnecessary suffering to a defenseless animal, leading to the tragic death of her seven-year-old bull terrier named Franklin. The heartbreaking incident took place in her former residence on Railway Terrace, Cwmparc, where the dog was left to endure extreme neglect and starvation.According to court proceedings, Davidson had deliberately confined Franklin within her home without providing any food or water, effectively leaving the dog to die from starvation and dehydration. The case was brought to light when RSPCA officer Nicola Johnson, during a routine inspection, observed the abandoned house on May 13, 2009. Through a window, she saw the body of a white dog, but was unable to determine whether the animal was alive or deceased at that moment.
Concerned, the officer contacted the police, who subsequently forced entry into the property. The dog was retrieved and taken to a veterinary surgeon for examination. The veterinarian’s report revealed that Franklin was severely emaciated, with very little fat reserves or muscle mass, indicating prolonged suffering. The veterinarian estimated that Franklin had been dead for between 24 hours and five days at the time of discovery. During her interview, Davidson admitted that she was solely responsible for Franklin’s care and acknowledged her inability to look after the dog properly.
Prosecutor Geraint Richards told Rhondda Magistrates’ Court that Davidson’s neglect was evident and that her own struggles with self-care, stemming from a troubled childhood and being placed in care from the age of 11, had contributed to her failure to care for Franklin. Defense lawyer Richard Williams highlighted Davidson’s personal history, stating she had been neglected herself and was not in a suitable state to care for any animals, including a budgie or a cat. He emphasized that the only fortunate aspect was that she was not responsible for a child, as the outcome could have been far more tragic.
Magistrate Dewi Hughes, in his summing-up, expressed profound disappointment, stating, “In over 25 years sitting on the bench, this is the worst case of animal cruelty I have encountered.” He emphasized the severity of the crime, noting that only a custodial sentence was appropriate given the circumstances. The court sentenced Davidson to 18 weeks in prison and imposed an indefinite ban on her from owning or keeping any animals in the future.
Outside the courtroom, RSPCA inspector Simon Evans condemned the cruelty, stating, “This poor animal died a wretched and painful death. Franklin was grossly underweight and suffered terrible neglect at the hands of his owner. The magistrate summed it up when he said it was the worst case he’d seen in 25 years.” Evans added that Davidson had multiple options available to her if she was unable to care for Franklin, including simply making a phone call for help, but she chose neglect instead. The case serves as a stark reminder of the importance of animal welfare and the consequences of cruelty.
