NEIL HARRIS FROM BIRMINGHAM AND TAMPONTS SENTENCED FOR CHILD SEXUAL ABUSE
In a case that has shocked the local communities of Birmingham and Tamworth, Neil Harris, a former dance instructor with a career spanning over five decades, has been convicted of serious sexual offenses against young pupils.Harris, who resided on Manta Road in Dosthill, Tamworth, and previously taught at a dance school in Erdington, Birmingham, was sentenced to five years in prison on Friday, 19 January, following a lengthy investigation and trial.
The allegations against Harris first surfaced in 2015 when a woman, who had been a student of his from 1983 onwards, decided to come forward.
She had conducted a personal online search and recognized Harris as still being an active dance instructor at a local studio.
Her concerns prompted her to contact the police, revealing that during her time as a pupil, Harris had engaged in inappropriate sexual conduct on multiple occasions.
She recounted that between the ages of nine and 13, Harris had pulled down her leotard and made inappropriate comments, including remarks such as “let’s see how you’re developing,” while looking at her bare chest.
Following her disclosure, law enforcement officials launched a comprehensive investigation, which uncovered additional victims and allegations of further inappropriate touching and abuse.
As a result, Harris, aged 72 at the time, was formally charged in March with 21 counts of indecent assault involving seven children.
The charges spanned several decades, with the most serious allegations relating to incidents from the 1970s and 1980s.
In November 2017, Harris faced trial at Birmingham Crown Court.
After a three-week hearing, the jury found him guilty of seven counts of indecent assault involving four girls.
The court heard that these offenses occurred during his tenure at the Birmingham dance school, where he was a prominent figure for over 50 years.
The judge, Peter Carr, delivered the sentencing, emphasizing the gravity of Harris’s actions.
He stated, “The offences you committed are aggravated by the fact they were committed in the presence of other students who were your pupils during lessons.
It is a gross breach of trust.” Judge Carr further highlighted the lasting impact on the victims, noting that the abuse had significantly affected their personal relationships, including their interactions with their own children.
Many of the women continued to be haunted by their experiences well into adulthood, and their testimonies painted a distressing picture of betrayal and trauma.
The court acknowledged the severity of the crimes, which not only violated the trust placed in Harris as an educator but also inflicted deep emotional scars on the victims.
In addition to the criminal proceedings, the case drew attention to the broader issue of safeguarding in dance schools and similar institutions.
Harris’s conviction serves as a stark reminder of the importance of vigilance and protective measures to prevent such abuses from occurring in the future.
The community now awaits his sentencing, which was scheduled for 19 January at Birmingham Crown Court, where the full extent of justice for the victims will be addressed.
