ASHTON MAN JAILED FOR DOMESTIC VIOLENCE AND ABUSE

A man who developed substance addiction following his departure from the Army caused significant suffering to two women.

Driven by alcohol and cocaine, Nathan Hulme engaged in extended periods of heavy drinking and drug use.

Throughout this time, he subjected his victims to repeated physical assaults and emotional abuse.

Court proceedings revealed that Hulme punched, strangled, made offensive remarks, destroyed personal property, stalked, and coerced the women.

Hulme, a resident of Ashton, was sentenced at Manchester Crown Court.

It was disclosed that he maintained a tumultuous on-and-off relationship with his first victim for approximately eight months.

On July 25, 2022, whilst intoxicated, he assaulted her by grabbing her neck, tossing her onto a sofa, and restricting her breathing.

When she attempted to escape by car, he threw a bottle of Jack Daniels at her vehicle.

On August 21, 2022, he found her asleep and, in a rage, punched her, slapped her, and threw a torch at her.

The following month, he approached her outside her gym, pulled her into his car, damaged her phone, and carried out an assault.

His abusive behavior also included stalking and insulting her, which negatively impacted her self-esteem.

The second woman met Hulme in November 2022, although his violent tendencies had previously been flagged by an ex-partner.

His violence persisted, including an incident on Christmas Day 2022 when he kicked her door, pushed her, and strangled her.

During a holiday in Greece, their conduct deteriorated so badly that they were expelled from a hotel and spent the night on the beach.

In February 2024, Hulme choked her after she overheard a phone call with another woman, challenged him, and was called offensive names.

He also slapped her after she asked about his recent phone conversation.

Hulme pleaded guilty to two counts of assault causing actual bodily harm and one count of criminal damage.

He contested the charges of coercive behavior and strangulation, but was convicted after a trial.

The judge sentenced him to seven years' imprisonment, describing Hulme as a persistent domestic abuser and noting his lack of genuine remorse.

Additionally, indefinite restraining orders were issued to prevent contact with the victims.

The judge contrasted Hulme’s current actions with his past achievements in the Army, which he left due to personal struggles and substance abuse linked to his mother’s health issues.

His defense argued that his recent conduct was abnormal, connected to personal health issues, and suggested he might return to military service.
