MAN JAILED FOR ATTACKING EX-WIFE
Munwar Alsubhi carried out a violent 'hammer-fisting' attack on his ex-wife along the Coast Road in Jesmond, prompting bystanders to intervene. After the assault, witnesses followed him as he went to a hotel, where police detained him.
During the incident, members of the public bravely stepped in to stop the attack, which involved the man repeatedly punching his former spouse.
Alsubhi had arrived in Newcastle from Saudi Arabia the previous summer with plans to visit his daughters, as his ex-wife was studying and working in the city.
Around 9am on 30 June, a driver on the Coast Road near Osborne Road saw Alsubhi assaulting the woman publicly.
Several drivers stopped their vehicles to help the victim, but Alsubhi continued his attack regardless.
A witness, Mr Hedworth, described the assault as frenzied.
The attack took place near two schools in the area.
Following the assault, Alsubhi destroyed his mobile phone and left the scene, pursued by two men who confronted him.
During the confrontation, he threatened one of the men, saying: 'I'm from Sudan, I don’t care, I will kill you, I will end your life.' He then also threatened both men with further violence.
Alsubhi entered the Cairn Hotel on Osborne Road in Jesmond, but the two citizens followed him until police arrived.
Officers found a knife and a hammer in his hotel room.
The woman, who has since returned to Saudi Arabia, sustained cuts to her hand and head injuries, and felt unsafe and frightened after the incident.
Alsubhi has been detained since July and has pleaded guilty to charges of assault and affray, resulting in a two-year prison sentence.
