PUB BOSS JAILED FOR SEXUAL ASSAULT IN NEWCASTLE
A former pub landlord has been handed a prison sentence after being convicted of sexually assaulting a woman who was left sobbing uncontrollably on the floor.David Prout, who was running a pub in Byker, Newcastle, at the time and also held a taxi licence, made unwanted advances towards his victim while disregarding her repeated pleas for him to stop.
He kissed her against her wishes before groping her chest, including beneath her bra.
Prosecutor Jessica Slaughter told Newcastle Crown Court that he dismissed her attempts to push him away, repeatedly forcing her back into her seat.
She added: "He repeatedly put his hand over her mouth and said 'shhhh'." The woman's partner subsequently discovered the pair and contacted the police.
In a victim impact statement, the woman said: "The assault has had a long-lasting impact on my day-to-day life and it left me in emotional turmoil." She further revealed that she now suffers from anxiety and recurring flashbacks.
Prout, 47, of Bothal Street, Byker, who maintained that any sexual activity had been consensual, was convicted on two counts of sexual assault and acquitted of a third charge, reports Chronicle Live.
Sentencing him to 21 months in gaol, Judge Gavin Doig commended the bravery of the victim.
Prout must also sign the sex offenders register for ten years and was issued with a ten-year restraining order.
Kelly Clarke, representing Prout, stated: "He continues to insist on his innocence but it's important to acknowledge a jury found him guilty after trial." Miss Clarke explained that Prout had operated the pub for six years and also held a taxi licence, which he has now forfeited due to the sexual assault conviction.
He has recently been out of work, caring for his young child while his partner is employed.
