MOHAMMED LIAQUAT ALI SENTENCED TO LIFE FOR MURDER OF LILIMA AKTAR MUNNY IN BIRMINGHAM

Mohammed Liaquat Ali, a 37-year-old man from Birmingham, has been handed a life sentence in connection with the tragic murder of his estranged wife, Lilima Aktar Munny. The court proceedings revealed that Ali carried out the fatal act by strangling Lilima, who was only 27 years old at the time of her death. The incident took place at her residence in Birmingham, a city where the couple had built their lives together before their marriage deteriorated.

According to court reports, the motive behind the brutal killing was rooted in a long-standing dispute over land in Bangladesh. This ongoing conflict between Ali and Lilima’s family, particularly her mother, played a significant role in the breakdown of their marriage. The court heard that the tension surrounding the land issue ultimately culminated in Ali’s violent assault on Lilima, leading to her tragic death.

The sentencing mandates that Ali will serve a minimum of 15 years in prison before he becomes eligible for parole. The court's decision was influenced by the violent nature of the attack and the devastating impact on Lilima’s family, especially her young daughters. Her family was left devastated and deeply distressed when Lilima failed to pick up her children from school, prompting concern and subsequent investigation.

Authorities found Lilima at the couple’s former residence on Pelham Road in Alum Rock, where she was discovered after her absence was noticed. The investigation uncovered that Ali, who had moved to the UK from Bangladesh in 1998 and married Lilima in 2004, was involved in the land dispute that contributed to the marital discord. Detective Sergeant Ranj Sangha described the attack as particularly violent and expressed hope that the court’s ruling would provide some measure of closure for Lilima’s loved ones.

Furthermore, the court emphasized the tragic consequences of the incident on her two young daughters, who now face a future without their mother. The case highlights the devastating effects of unresolved land disputes and marital conflicts, which can escalate into tragic violence. The community in Birmingham, especially those familiar with the case, are left to mourn the loss of Lilima and reflect on the importance of resolving disputes peacefully to prevent such tragedies from recurring.
