BARNSLEY RAPIST SENTENCED TO OVER SIX YEARS IN PRISON
A man who attacked and raped a woman after she had lost her friends on a night out has been given a prison term.Mohammed Elmi Mahamed, 33 years old, was sentenced to six years and nine months at Sheffield Crown Court after being unanimously convicted of raping a 19-year-old woman on New Year’s Day this year.
Residing on Princess Street in Barnsley at the time, Mahamed approached his victim at a taxi rank located in the town centre.
She had been celebrating with friends but had become separated from them earlier that evening.
He falsely offered to take her back to her friends but diverted her to a different location, where he committed the sexual offence.
The woman managed to flee and informed a friend about the assault once she returned to the town centre.
CCTV images helped authorities identify Mahamed, who was arrested the following day.
Barnsley CID’s Detective Constable Becky Robinson noted, “Our victim was alone and intoxicated, making her susceptible, and Mahamed deliberately targeted her because of this.
He lied about taking her to her friends but instead led her to a different place where he committed the offence.” She added, “Our team quickly identified Mahamed through CCTV evidence, leading to his arrest the next day.
He was charged and held in custody until trial.
Mahamed did not admit guilt, which meant the victim had to testify, a very difficult ordeal.
I commend her strength during this investigation.”
