LONDON MAN JAILED FOR STRANGLING PREGNANT WIFE DESPITE COURT NON-MOLESTATION ORDER

A man has been sentenced to life in prison for strangling his pregnant wife at her home in east London.

Mohammed Badiuzzaman, 35, was ordered to serve a minimum of 17 years for murdering Sabeen Thandi, 37, Forest Gate, last year.

Badiuzzaman was subject to a non-molestation order at the time of the murder, issued by the county court.

An Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) probe into how police officers handled the case is ongoing.

Prosecutor Sarah Plaschkes QC told the court that in November 2012 the defendant, a security guard of no fixed abode, started a relationship with Ms Thandi.

He moved into her home two months later and in April 2013 pressured her into an Islamic marriage, the court heard.

"The defendant was obsessive and controlling," said Ms Plaschkes.

The relationship continued to deteriorate and in June 2013 Ms Thandi obtained non-molestation and occupation orders against him.

On 6 July she allowed him back into her home in Disraeli Road and that night during an argument she was strangled.

At 00.18 BST on 7 July, officers received an abandoned call and found Ms Thandi's body in a bedroom.

The IPCC is investigating the actions of officers from the Met and Hertfordshire Police in the case.
