BIRMINGHAM MAN JAILED FOR LIFE OVER EX-WIFE'S BRUTAL MURDER
Mohammed Arfan received a life sentence after confessing to the murder of his ex-wife, Marena Shaban, who was 41 years old.The murder took place at the entrance of her apartment complex on North Holme in Bordesley Green, Birmingham, on 28 January.
CCTV footage showed Arfan preying on Ms.
Shaban, with several shots of him walking or driving past her workplace and waiting nearby after her shifts.
On the day of the attack, he committed a brutal stabbing that inflicted multiple injuries.
Police investigations revealed that Arfan had obscured his identity with a wig, with blood traces found on a door handle and in a car he abandoned shortly after the attack.
Officers recovered a lump hammer and a wig box from the vehicle, indicating he might have used the disguise to prevent recognition.
Witness accounts described the suspect as having afro hair, though CCTV footage did not conclusively show this, leading authorities to examine the owner of the car—a Toyota Corolla registered under Arfan’s name.
It was confirmed that Arfan bought the vehicle just weeks before the incident.
Following the stabbing, he was seen removing his jumper and laughing with friends in less than half an hour, which further implicated him.
He was sentenced to serve at least 22 years, with an additional two years to run concurrently for possessing a bladed article.
Ms.
Shaban’s family paid tribute to her as a loving mother of four, cherished by her children.
Her mother expressed intense grief over her loss, noting, “The impact of Marena’s tragic death has been profound socially, emotionally, and mentally.
Losing a child is devastating, and no parent expects to bury their own.” The investigation was led by Detective Inspector Jim Colclough, who commented that Arfan’s guilty plea was based on compelling evidence collected against him.
