TEEN FROM TRAVELLING FAMILY PLEADS GUILTY TO ASSAULTING WIFE IN HUDDERSFIELD TOWN CENTRE
A teenager from a travelling family was caught on Huddersfield town centre CCTV assaulting his wife after drinking alcohol for the first time.Miles Connors, aged 19, was seen repeatedly slapping and pushing his wife following a night where he had also tried spice, bringing shame on his travelling background.
District Judge Michael Fanning described the attack as 'nasty' and labeled Connors 'steaming drunk,' remarking to him in court: "I hope you are ashamed of yourself." Connors, of Millbrook Gardens in Dewsbury, pleaded guilty to assault by beating.
The court was shown CCTV footage of the incident, which occurred in the early hours of November 12 last year, starting in Southgate before 2:30 am.
Shamaila Qureshi, prosecuting, explained that Connors grabbed his wife and pushed her away, with her being seen crying during the assault.
He then got on the ground and slapped himself, then grabbed her arm and pushed her face.
The footage showed Connors walking away and returning, at one point grabbing her by the arm and pushing her into a wall, slapping her twice.
He then got down on the ground and slammed it, gesturing at her as she approached.
Connors' family watched the court proceedings.
The court was told that Connors had no previous convictions, and the judge highlighted that it was his first alcohol experience, with mitigation from his legal team clarifying he was deeply remorseful.
Judge Fanning stated: "If you had been convicted of this after a trial you'd be going to prison.
This sort of violence can not be tolerated." Connors' sentencing was postponed pending a report from Probation services, and the judge expressed disappointment at the incident, emphasizing that violence is unacceptable and hoped it would be his last offence.
