SCOTTISH COURT SENTENCES VOODOO BELIEVER FOR DOMESTIC ASSAULT AND ORDERS DEPORTATION
A voodoo believer who throttled a trainee doctor has been incarcerated and will be deported back to Ghana upon his release.
Michael Yartey, aged 49, moved to Scotland from Ghana to start a new life with his medical wife, but shortly after arriving in Perth, he attacked her.
The police were informed that Yartey claimed voodoo was his religion.
His wife initially sponsored his stay in the UK, but she revoked her sponsorship following a violent assault where Yartey seized her by the throat during an argument.
He then pushed her to the ground and refused to leave her house on February 11 this year.
Yartey admitted to the court that he had seized her by the throat and pushed her down.
He also acknowledged behaving threateningly by refusing her request to leave, pushing the door, and shouting.
He was sentenced to 82 days in jail and was issued a non-harassment order that bans him from approaching or contacting his former partner.
Due to his lack of a post-release address, he will be deported to Ghana after serving most of his sentence.
Yartey was visibly upset in court during his initial appearance, and his actions included threatening behavior and physical violence.
The court noted that since his wife no longer wishes to sponsor him, he is likely to be deported as he has no support network in Scotland.
