MICHAEL WRIGHT FROM ABINGDON SENTENCED FOR OVER ONE MILLION CHILD PORNOGRAPHY IMAGES
In a disturbing case that has shocked the community of Abingdon, Michael Wright, a 50-year-old resident, was brought before Oxford Crown Court after being found in possession of an astonishing number of indecent images and videos depicting children.The case highlights the severity of his crimes and the ongoing efforts of law enforcement to combat such heinous offenses.
Wright was discovered to have amassed a staggering collection of illegal material, with authorities revealing that he possessed over 71,000 images and more than 260 videos.
However, investigations indicated that he had downloaded thousands more, with the total number of indecent images he viewed reaching an estimated 1,771,881, alongside nearly 5,000 videos.
Prosecutor Cathy Olliver detailed that the material Wright collected included images of children as young as four years old, often depicted in distress and pain, and also included animal pornography.
The police executed a raid on Wright’s residence on Andersey Way in Abingdon in May 2014.
During the operation, officers reported that Wright immediately acknowledged the nature of the material on his computer, stating, “what you are looking for is on the hard drive, it’s child pornography.” The investigation uncovered that Wright had been actively searching for such illegal content online since 2008, downloading it onto his computer tower and external hard drives just prior to his arrest.
Wright’s online activity was traced through a file-sharing network, which facilitated his collection of the illicit images.
The authorities emphasized that Wright’s actions contributed to the perpetuation of the exploitation of children, with prosecutor Cathy Olliver stating, “People like you who view and download material like that perpetuate the misery of these children.
If it wasn’t for people like you who were prepared to download and view this material, those who create this sort of material would not operate.” During the court proceedings, it was revealed that Wright had been hunting for illegal material since 2008, and his collection included images that depicted children in obvious pain and distress.
The court also learned that Wright suffers from a mild learning disability, along with issues related to his sight and hearing.
A cochlear implant, fitted in 2012, had helped him become more engaged with the community and less isolated, according to his legal representatives.
Judge Maria Lamb delivered the sentence, condemning Wright for the ‘appalling’ nature of his collection.
She imposed a two-year prison sentence, suspended for 18 months, and issued a sexual harm prevention order that bans him from having unsupervised contact with anyone under the age of 16 for ten years.
The judge also ordered the forfeiture and destruction of Wright’s computer equipment to prevent further access to illegal material.
Wright was also required to sign the sex offenders register for a decade, pay a victim surcharge, and complete a 15-day cyber safety course.
His legal team argued that, given his lack of previous convictions and his disabilities, he would be vulnerable to exploitation if incarcerated, suggesting that community supervision would be more appropriate.
The court’s decision underscores the seriousness with which such offenses are treated, emphasizing the need to protect children from exploitation and prevent future crimes.
