MAN JAILED FOR RAPING WOMAN AS SHE WALKED HOME IN CORNWALL
A man who was convicted of raping a woman in a field as she made her way home from a night out has been sentenced to serve 18 years in prison.Eugen Simion, aged 21, a Romanian national living on Praze Road in Camborne at the time of the offence, was sentenced by Truro Crown Court on Monday, August 18, after a jury found him guilty of the crime following a trial.
The court heard that at around 1.40 am on February 2, 2025, the victim arrived at Camborne Police Station on foot, visibly upset, with muddy clothes and without shoes.
She reported that she had been raped approximately 30 minutes earlier in a nearby field by an unknown man.
The woman explained she had been out in Camborne town centre, then tried to get a taxi, which failed.
As a result, she decided to walk home.
CCTV recordings showed her unstable gait.
She recalled being approached by a male stranger who attempted to kiss her, but she pushed him away.
She told police her next memory was of being assaulted in a dark field.
When she arrived at the police station, some items from her handbag were missing.
Later, during a fingertip search at the scene, some of these items were recovered.
Law enforcement officials quickly identified Simion through CCTV footage and arrested him on February 6.
During questioning, Simion claimed he had been out drinking with friends but had decided to go home after getting too drunk.
He said he encountered the victim, who appeared intoxicated, and that she had initiated sexual activity before asking him to stop—which he claimed he did.
He admitted to running from the scene in the footage, stating it was late, cold, and dark, and he wanted to get home.
Simion also acknowledged taking the victim’s bank card, believing it to be his due to the darkness.
