MICHAEL TONBERG SENTENCED IN LOSSIE FOR HORRIFIC CHILD RAPE AND INDECENT IMAGES
In a case that has shocked the community of Lossiemouth and the wider Aberdeenshire area, Michael Tonberg, a 48-year-old former Royal Air Force technician, has been handed down a severe extended prison sentence following his conviction for the heinous sexual abuse of a young girl. The offences, which spanned several years during the 2000s and 2010s, involved multiple instances of rape and other forms of sexual assault against the child, who was under the age of 12 at the time.Tonberg appeared before the High Court in Aberdeen to face sentencing after a lengthy trial that culminated in his conviction on multiple serious charges. The court found him guilty of two counts of assaulting and raping a child, as well as engaging in lewd, indecent, and libidinous conduct towards the young girl. The offences were described by the judge as “appalling,” reflecting the gravity of the crimes committed.
In addition to the sexual assault charges, Tonberg was convicted of possessing and downloading indecent images or pseudo-images of children, a crime that further compounded the severity of his sentencing. Throughout the proceedings, Tonberg had maintained his innocence, denying all charges. However, following the jury’s verdict, he accepted responsibility for his actions.
Judge Graham Buchanan, presiding over the case, addressed Tonberg directly during sentencing. He stated, “You were convicted by the jury of what can only be described as offences involving the appalling sexual abuse over a significant period of a young child. You were also convicted of downloading and possessing indecent images of children.” The judge emphasized that the circumstances of the offences and a risk assessment justified the imposition of an extended sentence.
As a result, Tonberg was sentenced to a total of 13 years in prison, consisting of a 10-year custodial term followed by an additional three years of supervised release in the community. The court also mandated that Tonberg, whose address was listed as Castle Court, Lossiemouth, be subject to the notification requirements under the Sexual Offences Act for an indefinite period. This measure ensures ongoing monitoring and restrictions to protect the public from any potential risk posed by the convicted individual.
