DUNDEE UNITED AND ST JOHNSTONE LEGEND ALAN MAIN CONVICTED OF DOMESTIC ABUSE
Alan Main, a well-known figure in Scottish football as a former goalkeeper for Dundee United and St Johnstone, has been found guilty of domestic abuse. He appeared before Elgin Sheriff Court on Thursday after initially admitting to a pattern of abusive behavior toward his ex-partner.
The court was informed that between August 2023 and October 2022, the 58-year-old directed insults at the woman and deliberately ignored her for days at a time.
It was also revealed that Main’s frustrations stemmed from a comment made by his ex-partner’s father about his coaching career, which Main repeatedly brought up during their disputes.
During the hearing, the prosecution representative Shamielah Ghafar explained that Main met the woman online in 2023 while employed offshore, and after returning, they began living together.
As their relationship continued, conflicts arose, including periods during which Main refused to communicate, causing the woman considerable stress and worry.
Tensions worsened when her father made a joke about Main, which angered him and left her feeling anxious and unsafe.
The court also heard that Main insulted and undermined her parenting abilities, using derogatory language and criticizing her during a trip following the birth of their child.
The final incident involved her reporting him after he lashed out at her for being five minutes late to an engagement.
Main’s lawyer argued that much of the conflict was triggered by a joke from her father, who had called Main a paedophile and used other offensive terms.
The court decided to delay sentencing for six months, allowing Main to cooperate with social workers and demonstrate good conduct, with a return date set for November 12.
A non-harassment order was not imposed, as the woman reportedly did not support one.
The court recognized the complexity of the case and Main’s background, with the sentence deferred pending his participation in social services and compliance with court requirements.
